Interactive Design

Touchscreen interactives have become an established form of heritage interpretation in the modern museum. They promote learning through self-paced interaction leaving the user in full control of the experience.

Case Study 1 - Nantclwyd House

Client: Denbighshire Heritage Service

Nantclwyd House is an historic house dating from medieval times.
We developed a touchscreen interactive that incorporates a QTVR virtual tour, a 3D historical reconstruction and an interactive timeline.

Denbighshire Heritage Service chose Media Vision to create a virtual tour and touchscreen interactive for Nantclwyd House in Ruthin, North Wales.

The Grade One-listed Nantclwyd House is a medieval townhouse built in 1435 which has now been restored and the rooms dressed to reflect different periods in the building’s life.

The bi-lingual interactive addresses the social and physical heritage of the building through the use of a timeline and a computer-generated 3D reconstruction.

This allows visitors to explore the house during 4 distinct periods in it’s history.

The presentation also includes 360 degree panoramas of all the rooms, making the upper storey of the building accessible to those with limited mobility.

All the main screens are narrated and show a BSL signer.

The house opened to the public in June 2007.

Case Study 2 - Blue Streak

Client: Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, Carlisle

Blue Streak is an interactive multimedia presentation that tells the story of the Blue Streak rocket and its association with RAF Spadeadam situated near Carlisle in Cumbria. One of the objectives was to provide an accessible introduction to the themes of ‘rocketry’ and ‘the Cold War’. The interactive is fully compliant with the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Elements

Attractor Screen
A computer generated animation of the launch of the Blue Streak rocket.

Menu Screen
This grid of 9 video windows is drawn mainly from the rich archive of video footage available but also utilises photographs, plans and drawings.

History of Rocketry
Interactive Timeline This will be “scrollable” by touching a forward or a back button. Touching one of the graphics will launch a pop-up (or over-laid) window with more information that includes archive photographs and film.

What was Blue Streak
This programme tells the story of Blue Streak using video footage, stills, and voice-over narration. Subtitles are provided for those with hearing impairment.

Spadeadam Today
This section contains a number of 360 degree QuickTime VR panoramas of the site as it looks today. Users can explore the panoramas by dragging their finger over the image.

Game
The aim of the Rocket Launch game is to set the parameters for a successful launch of the rocket by choosing the amount of fuel and setting the “gimbal angle”.

Community Life
This section contains thumbnail images of personnel and oral history recordings with sub-titles.

Case Study 3 - Rhyl Miniature Railway

This bilingual touchscreen interactive was installed in the new Miniature Railway Museum at Marine Lake, Rhyl in Spring 2007. Rhyl Miniature Railway is the oldest surviving miniature railway in the U.K. There is a virtual train journey, a children's game, an interactive 'scrapbook' and a video history of the North Wales Railways narrated by famous Welsh TV announcer Arfon Haines-Davies.

Virtual Train Journey
This section was created by filming the journey around the lake from the point of view of a passenger sitting behind the tender.

Children's Game
Media Vision created a 3D environment in the style of a model railway. The game involves answering questions about the railway - asked by Jack the Railway Cat!
